inside thoughts on China and beyond

Photo Story – Baptism

My blog’s tagline explains the purpose of my blog: ‘show & tell’ about China and beyond. This photo story is then clearly a ‘beyond’. It is not taken in China -it took place in the center of The Netherlands. It is not about the Chinese: these are (Dutch) Indonesians. Nor is it about buddhism. This is a short impression of a Christian baptism that took place in a little pond in the gardens of De Hught, a secluded mansion on the southern slopes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It was a wet and cold afternoon. People were emotional. People were touched. People were shivering. But whether this was caused by the immersion in the Holy Spirit or, more down to earth, their immersion in the cold water on this rainy day, I couldn’t tell for sure. But I guess it was probably both.

On a sunny day, the garden with pond is a pleasant place to be. This was not one of those days; while some were preparing to get wet, other were struggling to stay dry.

. .

More rain; more prayers.

. .

Long sincere prayers of redemption and forgiveness preceded the immersion.

. .

Touching of lips.

. .

Boys calmly looking on.

. .

The immersion was thorough and not a body cell remained dry.

. .

A stretched-out arm.

. .

Some just lay there: floating in the water and seemingly not aware of the cold or anything else around them.

. .

With feet still in the water, hands went up in the air to receive the Spirit -and His blessing.

. .

While stretching her arms to give herself to her new-found heavenly Father, others prayed and laid hands and prayed even more.

. .

Speaking blessings and words in tongs, an incomprehensible speech stirred up by the Spirit.

. .

For reborn Christians, brokenness and joy go hand-in-hand.

. .

Baptised and reborn: new members of the Christian family.

. My family and I often stay in De Hught when back in Holland. It has everything you miss in big-city-Chengdu: solitude, quietness, surrounded by green gardens and forests -and fresh air. De Hught is located near Rhenen in the center of Holland. This Christian center for retreat and training is known for its large garden and green surroundings and is also available for conferences and celebrations.
